Merida, Mexico - Day 8

After 1 week in Merida, it was the day to go back home... We checked out from the hotel and crossed the road to the bus terminal for our bus ride to Cancun...

We took the ADO UNO bus as it was the one available at the timing we wanted... It was slightly more expensive than the ADO GL bus as it was the upgraded version of the ADO GL bus...

There were lesser seats in the bus as there were only 3 seats in a row. You have your own personal screen with earphones for entertainment plus more leg room and leg rest. Pillow and blanket were also provided. It is really a luxurious way to travel in a bus... =)

Us in the bus...

After 4 hours we reached the bus terminal in downtown Cancun and had to wait for the shuttle bus to the airport. We missed the earlier shuttle bus due to some delay at the ticketing counter and had to wait for the next one...

Finally on the shuttle bus to Cancun Airport...

We forgot to check which terminal should we alight for our UA flight and just followed when most people on the bus alighted... We were at Terminal 2 and when we got in we realized that UA flights were at Terminal 3, and thus we were at the wrong terminal... =(

So we went outside to wait for the free shuttle to Terminal 3...

We finally reached Terminal 3, which was rather nice. It had lots of counters for you to check in! We checked the counter for UA from the screens and went to queue... It was a good thing we were there early as not long after we started queuing, the line got really long. Actually we were also lucky in another area as our flight was not cancelled... From the screens we could see many flights being cancelled or delayed due to the blizzard affecting North Eastern US. Some people spent a long time at the counter as their flights were cancelled and they were trying to book alternative flights...

A food court inside the waiting area...
We chose to have our lunch at Johnny Rockets in the food court... The line was rather long...

We ordered a Rocket Single Burger, Grilled Chicken Burger, Fries, Onion Rings and a Milkshake...
Close up on the burgers... Tasted quite nice! =)

After lunch we took a look at the duty free shop and walk a little around the area... Lots of liquor being sold there but we realized that the bottle of XtabentĂșn we bought in Merida was more expensive here! We kept thinking whether to buy a bottle of Tequila back since it was something produced in Mexico. In the end we decided not to as we do not really drink much alcohol. However we did buy a bottle of Vanilla as it was much cheaper there...

Christmas tree in the waiting area plus this guy on slits walking around...

When it got closer to boarding time, our flight was delayed... In total it was delayed for about an hour... This delay made us wonder if we will miss our connecting flight as we only had a transit time of slight less than 2 hours and with the delay at Cancun we would have less than an hour to clear customs at Washington... But there was nothing we could do at that time except hoping that our connecting flight will be delayed too... =p

The plane that we were going to board...

Finally we were on board the plane which will take us to Washington Dulles Airport in 3 hours plus!

When we touched down at Dulles Airport we could see piles of snow here and there, evidence of the earlier blizzard... Plus we had to sit in the plane for a while as the gate was not ready yet... We were back to cold winter weather from warm and sunny Mexico... Our flight attendant even told us that there was a 40F difference in temperature between the 2 places and joked that we had left behind white sandy beaches for white snowy roads...

After we got down from the plane, we rushed to clear the customs and collect our luggage, hoping we will not miss our connecting flight... When we finally had a chance to check the screen, it stated that our flight was on time... Bad news as we had very little time to catch it... We thought we would missed it but later we saw that it was delayed a little and were rather happy as we still had a chance to catch it! I remembered we ran to the gate but it was not needed as our flight was further delayed... In fact the time was pushed back a few times as the cabin crew had not reached... We suspect that the original cabin crew could not make it for the flight, and thus last minute arrangement had to be made for other cabin crew to take over, resulting in the delay. But the guy kept assuring us that the flight will not be cancelled... I was terribly thirsty but all shops were closed already as it was late and YH had to walk a distance in order to get me a bottle of Coke...

We were finally on board the plane after about 2 hours of delay...
